December can be a crazy time in the classroom. The kids are antsy, your personal to-do list is a mile long (professional and person), and youā€™re still trying to cover curriculum while you can. But itā€™s also a time for gratitude, tradition, and reflection, which is why We Are TeachersĀ created theĀ Random Acts of Kindness Calendar (below) for the classroom!Ā Download it, print it, and share it with your students!

Exhausted Educator…I See You via Beth Houf

We are all one team.
We are all trying our hardest and bringing our best each and every day.

Our kids matter.
Our staff matter.
You matter.

Week 15: 11/26/18 – 11/30/18

I hope you enjoyed your time off, spending time with family, friends & those you love. Now we move to the next 4 week stretch, where it is full of learning, fun, and special eventsā€¦and a holiday break to enjoy. We have lots to do with our kids from now until December 21st, and look forward to their growth when they return in January. They always seem more grown up right after the breakā€¦happens every year!

Things to keep in mind these next 4 weeks:

  • For some of our students who will say ā€œitā€™s almost Winter breakā€ and lack motivation, it is time to push them & keep them excited and eager to learn.
  • For our students who come from challenging circumstances at home and are feeling anxiety about not being at Kennedy for over two weeks (and acting out because of it), it is time to show them how much you care & make the most of these next 20 days.
  • For our students that just keep smiling & working hard each day, it is time to pull them aside and tell them how much you appreciate them (Positive Postcard?) or perhaps give them that NOTE OF ENCOURAGEMENT that their parents filled out for them at Curriculum Night this year! šŸ™‚

Be proud of what weā€™ve accomplished with our students so far this year, but please keep the focus on learning in your classrooms as we return from Thanksgiving Break. In addition, Iā€™d encourage you to:

  • Take a second and tell a colleague that youā€™ve noticed how hard they are working and that you appreciate them working so hard.Ā Gratitude and appreciation are also essential for a healthy work environment. A simple thank you and a show of appreciation can make all the difference.
  • Make time to reflect on some of the positives that weā€™ve had this year that may have been overlooked as we have overcome the challenges of not having enough time.
  • Set a tone for your students that regardless of how much time is left before a long break that all of us will work hard and make the most of our school days.
  • CelebrateĀ being a member of our Kennedy SchoolĀ family

Parent-Teacher conferences offer teachers & parents the opportunity to see, celebrate and support each individual child. Just as we all appreciate praise for our efforts, parents appreciate praise for their efforts & their childā€™s progress. As you offer information about the students in your room, always remember that you are speaking about someoneā€™sĀ ā€˜whole worldā€™Ā and remember to be mindful of how that information will be received by your audience. Iā€™m confident you will exude professionalism and confidence this week as you inform parents about curriculum, assessment, grading/reporting, strengths & opportunities for growth. I know you will continue to develop a positive working relationship with your families and deepen that home-school partnership. Thanks for all that you do in preparation for this very busy week! Ā If Donna, Sara or I can offer you any support this week with conferences, please do not hesitate to ask.

Youā€™ll learn ways thatĀ trauma impacts students and what we can do to support kids without carrying the weight of that trauma ourselves. The podcastĀ also provides specific dos and donā€™ts to make it easier to navigate this in your classroom.

Trauma-informed teaching is not a curriculum, set of prescribed strategies, or something you need to ā€œadd to your plate.ā€ Itā€™s more like a lens through which you choose to view your students which will help you build better relationships, prevent conflict, and teach them effectively.

I donā€™t think anyone knows the meaning of the phrase ā€œOnly so many minutes in a day!ā€ better than someone in education. Ā There is always something waiting for us. Meetings. Papers. Calls to make. Email to answer. Things to file. Things to look up. Lessons to plan. Committees. Grad classes. Tech tools to figure out. Family. Commitments. PD. Ā  There may be days when we are stretched to the limit, feeling more like some human version of Stretch Armstrong with our arms pulled in different directions, about to break off. Ā  But, at the end of the day, itā€™s true. Ā The things that matter? Ā WeĀ makeĀ time for them. Ā  Those people that say, Ā ā€Oh, I donā€™t have time for thatā€¦ā€ Ā Is this an insinuation that some of us just have more time than others? Ā Ā Time is not something we just ā€˜have,ā€™ itā€™s something we make.Ā Ā Itā€™s something we make when things matter to us. Children matter to us. Rememberā€¦.what you do each and everyday at Kennedy School is in the best interest of the children we serve.
